Workdayology
This document provides insights to some of the common terminology you will find throughout Workday.
Action [Event or Task]:
A transaction within Workday (i.e., hire, rehire, termination, onboarding, send back, deny). A list of actions can be found in your Inbox.
Application:
Icons displayed on your Workday Home Page (or Landing Page) to organize tasks and information.
Approve:
Indication that a Manager has reviewed and approved a proposed action (i.e., job change, expense report, etc.).
Business Process:
A sequence of one or more actions/events/tasks that accomplishes a desired business objective (i.e., creating a job requisition, changing your name etc.).
Business Title:
Title that appears on the Workday Organizational Chart. May be different from your official job title (i.e., your Job Title may be “FSC” but your Business Title could be “Consultant”).
Cancel:
Canceling a business process stops the workflow in process. Only the initiator of an action can cancel it.
Deny:
Indication that a Manager does not approve the proposed action. The business process is stopped. If a Manager denies, rather than sends back an action, the action cannot be changed and resubmitted; the action must be restarted from the beginning.
Home Page [or Landing Page]:
Display’s a collection of different Applications to enable TSMs to quickly view and perform tasks (i.e., My Team, Personal Information, etc.).
Inbox:
The Inbox contains a chronological list of actions. Actions are business process transactions, tasks or to-dos that need to be completed in Workday.
View Profile:
Found on the Tool Bar, View Profile is a quick way to update your preferences, change your password and access personal quick links. You can also access your scheduled reports.
Notifications:
Notifications of completed business processes and notifications of completed scheduled reports.
Organization:
Refers to a grouping to organize people (i.e., location, cost center, supervisory, etc.).
Position:
An opening that is created within a Supervisory Organization in order to move or hire a worker.
Related Action:
The small icon/button located throughout Workday that displays the related actions that can be initiated by the worker, report, process, etc.
Role:
A designation that determines access to data, tasks, and reports.
Search Box:
Found on the Tool Bar, the Search Box is a quick way to search for TSMs, reports, or tasks.
Send Back:
Indication that a Manager is not approving the action as submitted and changes to the action must be made before it is approved. The action contains notes that indicate corrections/changes to the actions that must be completed. The action can then be resubmitted for approval.
Supervisory Organization:
Group TSMs into a Management Hierarchy based on supervisor to define who reports to whom.
To-Dos:
Reminder to do something outside of the Workday Business Process transaction.
